Four ways
a sim eats
your time

FAR CPA exam time management is not one problem. “I ran out of time on the simulations” describes four different failures — derailed, starved, rushed, blank — with four different fixes, and only one of them is being slow. Telling the other three to go faster makes them worse. The four are separated below by the numeric signature each one leaves in a per-cell timing trace, so you can tell which one you had.

Why FAR CPA exam time management is four problems, not one

Seven simulations carry about half the FAR score inside a four-hour exam. Because they are graded cell by cell, time is not spent on “a simulation” — it is spent on individual cells, and one cell can quietly consume the budget of the three that follow it. A post-mortem that only measures total elapsed time cannot see that happen.

These are the four categories our pacing report distinguishes, with the thresholds it actually uses.

The four-hour length, the five-testlet structure and the roughly even split of the score between multiple-choice and simulations are published by the AICPA and were checked against its own exam pages; the numeric thresholds below (1.75× par, 25% of the simulation, 40% of par, 90% of budget) are ours, chosen so each category picks out a distinct failure, and they have not been validated against exam outcomes.

1 · Derailed

Signature: one cell takes at least 1.75× its par time and consumes at least 25% of the whole simulation.

This is the expensive one, and the reason it is expensive is counterintuitive: the loss is rarely in the derailed cell, which you often get right in the end. The loss is in the cells downstream that got what was left. A pacing report that names the derailed cell without naming what it starved is only telling you half of it.

Fix: a per-cell abandon rule set before the exam — at 2× par, put a defensible number in and move. Not “work faster”.

2 · Starved

Signature: a cell answered in under 40% of par time, wrong, in a run where there really was time pressure — either something derailed, or total time reached about 90% of budget.

Starved cells are where the derailed cell's bill actually lands. Treating them as a knowledge problem sends you back to study a topic you might know perfectly well.

Fix: upstream. Fix the derail and these disappear.

3 · Rushed

Signature: identical to starved — fast, wrong — except the run finished comfortably under budget. Nothing squeezed you.

This one gets systematically misdiagnosed, because the trace looks like time pressure. It is not. It is starting to compute before finishing reading — the exhibit had a second condition, the cell asked for the year-two figure, the units were thousands. Our own pacing logic got this wrong at first: an early version labelled every fast wrong answer “starved”, which meant a candidate who finished a simulation in two minutes out of an eighteen-minute budget was told they had been squeezed for time. The prescription was exactly backwards.

Fix: a forced read-through before the first entry. Speed is not the problem, so more speed is not the fix.

4 · Blank

Signature: the cell is empty.

Graded cell by cell, a blank cell is a certain zero, while a rough figure derived from the right method is sometimes not. A blank is also diagnostically different from a wrong answer: wrong tells you what you believe, blank tells you nothing at all.

Fix: never leave one. Put down the number your method produces even if you do not trust it.

CPA exam simulation tips that follow from this

Most CPA exam simulation tips are one instruction — go faster — applied to four different failures. Sorted by which failure they actually fix, the useful ones are short. Set the abandon rule before the exam, not during it: a number you pick at 2× par while calm is a rule; a number you pick while behind is a panic. Read the whole exhibit before the first entry, which costs thirty seconds and removes the entire rushed category. Never leave a cell blank, because cell-by-cell grading makes an empty cell a certain zero while a defensible figure sometimes is not. And practise with a clock: without per-cell times you cannot tell starved from rushed, and the two have opposite prescriptions.

One honest limitation on our side: we time the whole simulation on the server, but per-cell timing is reported by the browser. We call the output a pacing report rather than precise per-cell measurement, and we will keep calling it that until the timing moves server-side.
